WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Chemical peels are an excellent, safe and effective way to smooth and brighten your skin texture.  Chemical peels help to heal acne, lighten sun and age spots in addition to reducing the appearance of fine lines.  Some peels aid in minimizing the appearance of minor scars.

Results of peels are very impressive and beneficial.  Peels are applied topically to the skin surface promoting the exfoliation of dead skin cells, improving texture and the rate of cell turnover.

WHAT PEELS DO WE OFFER?

♦ TCA peel                           ♦ Salicylic acid peel

♦ Glycolic acid peel               ♦ Mandelic acid peel

♦ Jessners peel                    ♦ Pyruvic acid peel

The type of peel one receives will depend on your goals and skin type.  Choosing the correct peel is important and we will advise patients as to the correct peel for each individual.

GLYCOLIC ACID PEEL

Glycolic peels use a mild chemical solution to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin.  Glycolic acid peels do not penetrate as deeply into the skin as other peels such as a TCA peel.  Therefore, the downtime is minimal as is the irritation from the peel.  Glycolic peels are ideal for those with sensitive skin and minimal sun damage and acne.  Glycolic peels come in three strengths each tailored to the individual needs of the patient.

PYRUVIC ACID PEEL

Pyruvic acid is found naturally in fermented fruit, honey and apples.  This peel penetrates deeply through the skin stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.  It is ideal for patients with skin conditions such as photoaging, pigmentary disorders and acne.

TCA PEEL (TRICHLOROACETIC ACID)

TCA peels are used to exfoliate and renew the skin on a superficial to deep level.  This is one of the strongest peels available and results are very impressive.  TCA is mostly used on the face, neck and hands.  The first few days after this treatment your skin is likely to be red and irritated.  The top layer of the skin gently begins to peel away in sheets resulting in smoother and fresher looking skin.  It is an excellent option for patients with ageing skin conditions.  TCA peels soften superficial furrows, hyperpigmentation and improve overall skin texture.

SALICYLIC ACID PEEL

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxyl acid and it is primarily used in the treatment of acne.  This is a mild to medium peel and works by penetrating into follicles and cleans out clogged pores.  It is a very effective pore cleanser and also improves the appearance of sun damaged skin with minimal irritation.

JESSNERS PEEL

Jessners peel is a combination of lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol.  This peel provides a deep penetration of the skin helping to exfoliate the outer skin layers.  This peel stimulates the deeper dermis level with the end results of collagen synthesis.  It is used to treat extensive sun damaged skin, hyperpigmentation and aids in the healing of acne.

MANDELIC ACID PEEL

A mandelic acid peel is usually recommended for those with sensitive and darker skin types.  It acts as a mild exfoliant, stimulating collagen synthesis and new cell formation.  It is beneficial in suppressing pigmentation and has a lightening action.  It is also used to treat acne and photodamaged skin with minimal irritation.

ARE SKIN PEELS PAINFUL?

Light and superficial peels are characterized as painless but can be uncomfortable.  One may experience a slight stinging sensation.  Medium strength peels tend to be slightly more painful but measures are taken in our office to minimize discomfort.

IS THERE A DOWNTIME WITH CHEMICAL PEELS?

There is minimal downtime after a chemical peel.  Patients often experience flaking, peeling and some redness 1 to 4 days after a peel.  Others do not experience any downtime at all.  This is based on the type of peel chosen by each patient based upon our recommendations.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

Your skin condition will determine the appropriate peel and the number of peels necessary to achieve ones cosmetic goals.  In most cases, a series of peels is recommended with maintaining thereafter.

THAT TYPE OF RESULTS WILL PATIENTS SEE?

Patients will see smoother, tighter and more even skin tone following a series of peels.  If you have any questions or desire treatment, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Greene.
