WHAT IS IPL?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light and is a non-invasive, non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed in our office.  Sometimes referred to as photofacial, IPL is effective for improving the appearance of:

♦ Sun damage and sun spots

♦ Age spots and liver spots

    ♦ Freckles

♦ Uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation

    ♦ Fine lines and wrinkles

    ♦ Spider veins (broken capillaries)

    ♦ Enlarged pores

The IPL is most often used on the face, but can be used on other parts of the body.  Although it is referred to as a laser, it technically is not a laser.  Multiple light frequencies are used with the IPL, while most lasers use a single frequency of light.

WHAT ARE THE BENFITS AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

The IPL works by heating the walls of the small facial veins and pigment producing cells causing them to weaken and shut down.  When the small facial veins and sun spots are destroyed a more even skin tone is achieved.  The body will then absorb and shed the remnants of the capillaries and pigmented waste.  Patients often experience a slight tingling and a warm sensation during treatment.  Procedures usually take 15-30 minutes, depending upon the size of the treated area.  IPL is safe for most all skin types.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Most patients experience considerable improvement after 1-2 treatments depending upon the skin condition and laser treatment level.

WHAT TYPE OF RESULTS WILL I SEE?

Typically within 2 weeks the body has shed and absorbed the pigmented and vascular waste.  The skin becomes noticeably clearer.  The brown spots are lighter and redness greatly reduced.  Exceptional results can be maintained with occasional follow-up treatments, sunscreens and a proper skin care regimen.

IS THERE DOWNTIME ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROCEDURE?

IPL requires no real downtime or recovery period.  You can maintain normal activities and return to work and apply their makeup immediately.  Following treatment, your skin may appear slightly swollen and flushed.  These minimal side effects subside after a few days.  In the event of discomfort, patients can take ibuprofen and use ice packs.  Special care should be taken to limit sun exposure to the treated area for at least a week after the procedure.
